Whether you consider yourself a foodie or not, most people are aware of the ongoing battle of one-upsmanship when it comes to oppulant boozy Sunday brunches in Bangkok. Competition is fierce and everyone strives to have their venue uttered at the end of a sentence that begins with “The best brunch is Bangkok is…” Over the years I have had the privilege of eating and drinking my way through some of the best that Bangkok has to offer; and Flow at the Millennium Hilton Bangkok has shot to the top of the list. They offer an unparalleled full day brunch that opens up the entire hotel to you as a diner and lets you enjoy a full day brunch that begins at 11:00 and ends well after 16:00hours. It begins with complimentary cocktails and canapés at Three Sixty from 11am to 12 noon on the 32nd floor where you will discover unobstructed awe inspiring views of the Bangkok skyline. At 12Noon, the buffet begins downstairs at Flow where you can dive head first into an international bevy of gourmet delicacies highlighting signature dishes from their award winning steakhouse Prime, their first class Thai restaurant (Maya) and their Chinese restaurant (Yuen). I have to mention how fabulous the free flow wine is, as they offer top shelf house wine that they rotate on a regular basis. On my visit I enjoyed copious amounts of both the red Michael Lynch Reserve, 2009 from France and the white Long Flat Chardonnay, 2010 from Australia. The quality of the cuisine is fabulous and everything that they offer is cooked to perfection. Absolutely everything I tasted was stunning. For me, the top dish is the Prime Beef Tartare, which is the same version you get from Prime. It’s one of the best versions of this classic dish that you will find anywhere, let alone on a buffet. Another stand out is the succulent Prime Rib Roast which was pink and juicy and tender beyond belief as well as the Slow Roasted Lamb Loin that is magical when accompanied by the Red Wine Sauce. The spicy Fried Snapper w/ Sweet Chili Sauce is perfection, while other highlights include the made to order Seared Foie Gras, the tantalizingly Spicy Foie Gras Spaghetti w/ Kaffir Lime & Chili, Goose Leg Confit w/Lemmon & Herb, Salt Crusted Fish, Butter Chicken, Shrimp & Chicken Tandoori and voluptuous Raw Oysters imported from Australia.
With over 220 items on the buffet, you want to make sure you save room for specialties like sea scallops, creamy mashed potato, glazed with lemon and potato cream,‘Veal Orloff’, truffle fondue, spicy papaya salad with soft shell crab, miang kum with cha-plu leaves and river prawn soufflé, jumbo shrimp dim sum, wok-fried Chinese pancake filled with chives, Chinese BBQ pork, caviar bar, sushi, sashimi, tempura, Alaskan King crab, mussels, and a dizzying array of salads. Another highlight is the free access to their private Cheese Room. It is a stunning accomplishment, and serves as a proper shrine to “cheese, glorious cheese” in all its incarnations. Considered by many to be one of the best cheese rooms in Asia, you gain access to a wide variety of international cheeses, with seductive aromas and textures for even the most refined palates.
At 15:00 hours you are invited next door to The Lantern coffee shop which they transform into an all you can eat dessert venue with house made chocolates, cakes and confections that will boggle the mind. You can enjoy signature selections such as Teppanyaki Ice Cream, Chocolate Whiskey Truffle and Fresh Strawberries, meringue and Chantilly. Dessert is served until 16:00 hours, but your day isn’t over as you are next invited to chill out and relax at The Beach. This is their unique pool and deck, which is a surreal experience in which a tropical sandy beach and a cool dip in the pool meets the river as it flows through the city.
There is no other place on or off the river where you can enjoy so much, for such an extend period of time. The facilities, cuisine, service and unparalleled access leaves you feeling a like a VIP. Priced at just $66.76USD (1,999Baht) net for brunch only and $100.15USD (2,999Baht) net per person for brunch with free flow house wine and sparkling wine; Flow should be at the top of your list for an unforgettable and sumptuous all day food and wine feast on the river.
