The Sacramento Tree Foundation has scheduled the first of two Mulch Madness events for August at McKinley Park. The public is invited to get involved and contribute to the greening of the community. Volunteers are needed to help care for the park by applying mulch rings around park trees.
This is a volunteer opportunity so if you have a wheelbarrow, grab it and join the after-work mulching party. No wheelbarrow? Hey, just show up. The Tree Foundation promises extra wheelbarrows, gloves and rakes.
To ensure that your time is a success and fun, too, individuals should prepare for this event in the following ways:
1. Begin your day with a healthy breakfast
2. Wear weather appropriate clothing and closed toed shoes
3. Bring along a water bottle
Ann Fenkner, who heads up these events says, “I like to think of this as an alternative to the cocktail hour; it’s the‘care-for-your-park’ hour.”
Why is this a big deal? Well, the work is needed because the paid staff does not have the time to do this work due to thin staffing and numerous other priorities to occupy their time.
She says, “The Park used to have several maintenance workers and now is down to one and one half.” Ah, yes, tight budgets.
That’s Monday, August 12th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at McKinley Park. Meet near the basketball courts. You can get more information at sactree.com.
