During the summer the San Antonio Food Bank is pressed more than ever, tasked with distributing more than 3,800 meals daily to children at 127 feeding sites.
During the school year these children rely upon meals through the national free/reduced meal program and that safety net disappears when school ends. Food drives take on a whole new meaning in the summer and Five Star Cleaners is lending a hand to the San Antonio Food Bank once again with its third annual summer food drive, Five for 5.
The owners of Five Star Cleaners – Richard Thum, Sharlene Thum and Bryan Newbold – urge all customers and local residents to support this outreach campaign which began July 8.
Sharlene Thum, vice president and co-founder of Five Star Cleaners, says, “Texas recorded six of the 10 counties in the country with the highest rate of childhood food insecurity in 2011, according to Feeding America. Never in my wildest dreams would I put the word ‘insecurity’ with the word ‘food.’ Childhood hunger should not happen in America, and that is why Five Star Cleaners is eager to kick off this year’s Five for 5 food drive. ”
Those who bring in five cans of food to any of the 18 convenient Five Star Cleaners locations will
receive a $5.00 off coupon for any future dry cleaning order, and two Scorpions tickets for $20.
Thum added that this year’s donors also have the opportunity to support the Five for 5 effort by making a financial donation to the San Antonio Food Bank by using a special Five for 5 QR code.
The code is available on all coupons, dry cleaning bags and in-store signage. The QR code links to the San Antonio Food Bank’s web site where a donation can be made through their Pay Pal option.
Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank says of the partnership, “Being able to leverage a relationship with a business partner in the community that helps feed children is a great benefit to all. We appreciate Five Star Cleaners stepping up and creating a robust and creative summer food drive to help us in our mission to feed children while helping customers maximize their To find the Five Star Cleaners locations, visit www.myfivestarcleaners.com
