On the morning after their historic Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship win — the first ever in program history — the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s softball team gathered in Room 218 of the Mark Twain Athletic
Building to watch the live broadcast of the NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show.
By winning the GLVC championship, the Tritons knew they had earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, but they had to wait until Monday to find out where, when, and whom they would be playing in the regionals, which are set to begin nationwide on Thursday and Friday.
Selection Show host Katie Hargitt of NCAA.com only raised the level of excitement, when she began the live online webcast a couple minutes late (approximately 9:32 a.m. (CDT) on Monday morning), by welcoming all who were watching to the 2013 NCAA D2 Softball national tournament announcement.
Fortunately, UMSL head coach Brian Levin and the rest of the Tritons had to wait less than 10 minutes to find out where they were going, as Hargitt, who twice mangled saying the school’s name, did manage to correctly say that the University of Missouri-St. Louis was named the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Regional, which will be hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.
UMSL (39-11) will play six-seeded Southern Indiana (29-20) in the opening game of the Grand Valley State Regional, on Friday, May 10, with first pitch set for noon (EDT).
Tournament host Grand Valley State (39-6) was named the No. 2 seed in the regional, and will play No. 7 seed Ferris State (29-14), immediately after the UMSL-Southern Indiana game on Friday.
The two winning teams from Friday, will then meet for an 11 a.m. (EDT) game on Saturday, with the victors advancing to the regional final on Sunday.
The regional final winner will advance to the Super Regional and would face the winners of the other Midwest Regional, which is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis (50-6). UIndy was the No. 1 ranked team in the country going into last weekend’s GLVC Tournament.
But that was before UMSL whomped them on their way to the Tritons first league championship.
The two teams that lose on Friday, will play an elimination game Saturday afternoon at Grand Valley State, with the winning team facing the losing team from the above mentioned winner’s bracket game, while the losing team would have its season ended, after suffering its second loss in the double-elimination NCAA Regional.
The winner of that second elimination game on Saturday, would advance to the regional final on Sunday, but would be faced with the task of having to beat the winner’s bracket team twice in a row to advance to the Super Regional.
