If you’re interested in learning about wine, enjoy wine and food pairings, a sophisticated luxury environment, and have been following the career of sommelier Hai Tran – you need to attend “Umstead Uncorked”.
Held the last Thursday of every month, the hour-long gatherings, led by Herons’ sommelier Hai Tran, take participants through four wine tastings, complemented by small plates, in a relaxed, sophisticated environment. The series will cover new territories in the second half of 2013, from the perfect pairings for holiday entertaining to wines from New York, North Carolina, Sicily and Bordeaux.
Events take place in the Fireplace Lounge or on the Terrace (weather permitting) and are $40 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (919) 447-4000.
Umstead Uncorked: May – December 2013:
“Portugal – More Than Meets the Eye”
Thursday, May 30, 6-7 p.m.
A region that is more associated with stellar fortified wines than quality white and red wines, Portugal has recently been looking to add more than Port and Madeira to its repertoire. Guests will learn about the region and have an opportunity to taste some of the indigenous varietals being utilized to shape the new face of Portugal.
“A Rosé by Any Other Name…”
Thursday, June 27, 6-7 p.m.
A wine that is often overlooked and misunderstood due to its color and association with white zinfandel, participants will gain insight on what makes these wines so special. While Rosé is commonly thought of as a summer time wine, after trying the different offerings it will soon be considered an anytime wine.
Taste Around the United States
Thursday, July 25, 6-7 p.m.
Wine culture is on the rise in the U.S., just as it is decreasing in European regions with which it has long been associated – France, Italy and Spain. Participants will explore the ever-expanding regions of domestic wine production, with examples from New York, Virginia, and even North Carolina.
“If You Like This, Try This…”
Thursday, August 29, 6-7 p.m.
This event will take familiar flavor profiles from major varietals and connect them to those less familiar. Sommelier Hai Tran will guide participants through international varietals that will open their eyes to and taste buds to new favorites.
Thursday, September 26, 6-7 p.m.
Guests will explore wines of the Bordeaux region, which has experienced back-to-back stellar vintages with the release of the 2009s and 2010s. Sommelier Hai Train will showcase a few top examples of great Bordeaux that won’t break the bank, and provide a primer to the region’s whites, reds, and sweet wines.
Thursday, October 31, 6-7 p.m.
A region often overlooked for wine production, due to its historic association with Marsala and the production of bulk wine, Sicily has recently enjoyed a renaissance with its native varietals and diverse microclimates. In this event, wine enthusiasts will explore some great examples of the mavericks that are helping to change the face of Sicilian wine.
Wines Fit for a Feast
Thursday, November 21, 6-7 p.m.
With Thanksgiving in mind and Christmas soon to follow, Hai Tran shares his insights on versatile wines that will please all palates and complement traditional holiday meals.
“Come quickly, I am drinking the stars!”
Thursday, December 19, 6-7 p.m.
These words are attributed to the Dom Pierre Perignon as he tasted his first bottle of sparkling Champagne. Participants will learn about the production of sparkling wine and explore the versatility of a varietal too often reserved for special occasions.
