A lot of work goes into organizing an event of this nature. Here is what the founder of SCFA had to say:
“Shelter staff and volunteers are very special people,” said Lynn Lawson, founder of Second Chance for Animals. “They not only give of their time at the shelter but often donate money, organize fundraisers, shuttle animals to veterinarian visits, and give their heart (and home) for these animals. To them, the animals are not strays; they are pets.”
“They cry when one is sick or passed-over for adoption, and they cheer when one gets adopted,” continued Lawson. “They hold their tongue when one is turned in, because this means the animal isn’t dumped on the street. It is brought to a place where it will be cared for, fed, and given a chance for a happy home. They remember that most animals don’t end up at the shelter because they aren’t loved or they did something wrong. Owners become ill, go into nursing homes, and sometimes lose their home. The shelter is their new beginning.”
The Franklin Township Animal Shelter is located at 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873 Telephone: 732-873-2500 ext. 6255. The shelter is open for adoptions Tuesday through Saturday from 12-3 p.m. and Thursday evenings 5:30-7:30 p.m. Over 1,000 animals come through the shelter’s doors each year.
Second Chance for Animals (SCFA) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization that helps animals in need in Franklin Township. They provide support to the Franklin Township Animal Shelter and community through fundraising, education, community outreach, fostering, and helping with animal care.
Funds raised by SCFA are also used to spay and neuter all animals prior to adoption. SCFA partners with the Franklin Township Food Bank to supply pet food to pet owners served by the Franklin Township Food Bank.
