Georgia Revolution won through a tough tie in Colorado on Tuesday 8th May 2013, in order to earn themselves a spot in the 2013 US Open Cup first round to be played next week, May 15th with a tie against another Colorado side, Real Colorado Foxes.
It was a long trip to make in order to compete in a play-in match but the Revs conquered the journey, took to the field at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch, CO, and emerged victorious.
Kwadwo Poku opened the scoring on 23 minutes after picking up a loose ball in the box and firing his side into a 1-0 lead in what was a nervy, tetchy opening period of play.
Georgia would hold onto this lead for an increasingly long time but frustratingly lost a goal on 76 minutes when Marc Herschberger headed home for the home side, a goal that would eventually take the game into overtime.
Even after the 30 minutes of extra time, the two sides couldn’t be separated and only penalty kicks would decide who would progress to the first round proper of the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
Fatigue had been a big factor in this final conclusion to the game, with legs becoming weary during the final minutes of play and now it came down to which team could hold its nerve in front of goal from 12 yards out.
After Gerard Barbero scored the Revs opening kick, Colorado Rovers were always playing catch up, especially as keeper Zachary Schultze managed to stop the Rovers first spot kick.
Spot kick after spot kick then proceeded to find its target but eventually it would come down to a numbers games and the Revs just kept on converting, making it impossible for their hosts to overcome their missed opening penalty.
The victory now allows the NPSL side to host the first round match at RYSA Soccerplex on Tuesday May 14th against Real Colorado Foxes from the PDL. Kick off 7pm.
Its one of those ties that throws up the NPSL v PDL scenario again, pitching league against league is sure to be entertaining. The added incentive of NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks waiting in the wings for the winners in round two is sure to be an added bonus for both clubs as the opportunity to take on one of the countries bigger guns is a rarely available one each season. The Revs in particular will be looking to progress in order that they try and avenge last years defeat by the Silverbacks at the same stage.
Final score from Colorado
Colorado Rovers 1 Georgia Revolution 1
(Georgia win on 5-3 on penalties)
