After a crowd of approximately 2,581 fans attended the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) spring game back in April, the UTEP Miner football team is ready to begin the 2013 season with new head coach Sean Kugler.
Lockport, New York native Sean Kugler spent time with the Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers as well as the Boise State Broncos.
Kugler’s last coaching job was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012 where he was the offensive line coach. The offensive line reduced the number of sacks from 42 to 27 and Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 4,077 yards which landed the Steelers in the Super Bowl in 2011. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh fell to Green Bay 31-25.
Kugler is no stranger to UTEP as he was a four-year letterman from 1985 to 1988 under current UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull. And Kugler held various coaching positions such as a graduate assistant, defensive line, tight end, strength and conditioning, and offensive line coach from 1993 to 2000 before departing to Detroit.
Not to recently UTEP announced its new location for its summer training camp come August. Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations Nate Poss chose Alpine, Texas as the new training site.
Poss attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas where he obtained his Master’s in Education. Poss was also the running backs and defensive backs coach as well as the assistant basketball coach from 1988-1990.
The Miners had thoughts about returning to Socorro, New Mexico or having camp in Silver City, New Mexico. However, Poss chose the small west Texas town of Alpine.
Sul Ross President Ricardo Maestas worked with Nate Poss to finalize the decision. Maestas is now working on completing a three-year contract for UTEP to remain in Alpine, if UTEP chooses to do so.
Most likely UTEP will use Jackson Field, which is the Sul Ross Lobo football teams home field, and Buck Stadium which belongs to the Alpine Independent School District and was recently renovated.
For those who are unfamiliar with Alpine, Texas, the town lies 222 miles, approximately three hours and 23 minutes southeast of El Paso. Sul Ross State University is a four-year university that competes at the NCAA Division III level. I myself am a 2013 graduate of Sul Ross.
The UTEP Miner football team opens up its preseason camp come August 8th and the Miners will remain there until the 20th. The 2013 season kicks off on September 7th at 6:00 p.m. MT in El Paso as UTEP hosts the University of New Mexico Lobos. And the much anticipated game versus the Texas A&M Aggies is on November 2nd in College Station, Texas
