In a June 28 press release, Valiant Comics announced a rare variant cover for their newest series “Quantum and Woody.” The book will be limited to only 750 copies and will feature a cover by Eisner-Award Winning Artist Tony Millionaire. This exclusive issue will be available only at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 from July 18-21.
This variant is the “Quantum and Woody” Liberty Variant is the first ever convention exclusive cover for Valiant and will be available at the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund booth inside the San Diego Convention Center. All proceeds from the sale of the book will directly benefit the First Amendment legal and education work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the organization that works to protect the freedom to read.
The CBLDF variant cover is one of the few pieces of art that Millionaire has done in the superhero genre making the cover that much more rare. The artist has received praise as the creator of the “Maakies” and “Drinky Crow” comic strips. His style is one that falls in line with the off-beat nature of “Quantum and Woody.”
With this SDCC exclusive Valiant Comics is joining an impressive list of corporate sponsors of the CBLDF which includes DC Comics, IDW Publishing, Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, comiXology.com and Diamond Comics Distribution.
“Valiant have been doing some of the most exciting comics on the stands, and we’re thrilled to be joining forces with them for this project,” said Alex Cox, Deputy Director of the CBLDF. “Between being huge fans of the brilliant Tony Millionaire, and the high quality of what Valiant has published so far, this is going to be a great project, and will be a tremendous fundraiser. The Valiant staff has been extremely generous, and we can’t wait to debut this in San Diego!”
“Quantum and Woody have one the most crazily passionate fanbases in comics and, with our solidified support of the CBLDF now in place, they’re the perfect choice to debut our first convention-exclusive variant cover – and all to benefit of the CBLDF’s vitally important mission. This is a very special release for us, and one that we’re incredibly proud to have produced on behalf of the CBLDF,” said Valiant CEO and Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani.
“Quantum and Woody” #1 will be released on July 10. The series written by James “Gambit” Asmus with art by Tom “Hulk: Season One” Fowler is bringing back the dysfunctional brother relationship of Eric and Woody Harrelson. It is a reimagining of the hit series of the 1990s with a modern feel.
