In the first foundation challenge, the contestants must complete the looks of costumed party attendees for an elaborate costume ball with colorfully-dressed cast members from Syfy’s new docu-series “Heroes of Cosplay” in attendance for inspiration. “Heroes of Cosplay” premieres immediately following “Face Off.” “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke will serve as guest judge for the challenge.
For the first spotlight challenge, the contestants are split into two teams with veterans vs. newcomers. They are tasked with an elaborate challenge in which they must create five original fantasy characters; an ogre, pixie, fawn, troll and a witch. The characters must be cohesive and able to live in their own hyper-stylized fantasy world. Academy Award-winning makeup artist Bill Corso (“Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “The Amazing Spider-Man”) will be on hand to advise the contestants.
“Face Off” is a competition/elimination series exploring the world of special-effects make-up artists and the unlimited imagination that allows them to create amazing works of living art. The contestants are tasked with elaborate feature challenges, including executing full body paint make-up on models and creating their own horror villain. Challenges incorporate effects make-up, and include a wide range of skill sets including prosthetics, 3-D design, sculpting, eye enhancers, casting and molding. Each episode involves incredible reveals of the contestants’ finished work, and the drama of one contestant being sent home by the panel of expert and celebrity judges. It all culminates in one winner who receives the ultimate prize of being a guest lecturer at the Make Up For Ever Academy in New York and Paris, a 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid, and $100,000.
