Rainy day in LaGrange, Georgia, Day three in the West Point Lake Battle and the way the weather and the fishing has been going “whatever works.” The bilge pumps were running full tilt today. The conditions today were almost as seething as the 2013 Bassmaster Classic was today only with rain. With Talladega Superspeedway so close can’t image which ones got the better weather and which one was easier to sit through.
The fans are soaking wet
Casey Ashley, “You all are better dedicated fans than I am. it’s cold in this rain out here watching us. If I wasn’t fishing I sure as heck wouldn’t be out here.”
Fletcher Shyrock, “ A moto lasts thirty-minutes in the pelting rain and mud but this is a whole eight hours in it.”
Keith Combs,”The guys in this series never slow it down they catch fish every day out there. These conditions I just haven’t been able to figure the fish out. I was sight fishing but I wasn’t really topwater fishing. I used a wacky rig and a 7-inch finesse worm. Rain sure hurts a 70mph running on the lake. Check out Biobor Fuel Additive for your engine with that ethanol in your engine I used it all last year and it really made a difference.”
Pete Ponds, “I was scraping and clawing just like everybody else. I caught two fish today and then it was a struggle. I had fish on the line and then I brought it up and it got caught in the tree that was hanging over it, I hit the button by accident and got a backlash and I had to reel that fish in the boat by hand. The rod went in the water, but the fish got in the boat.”
Day Hite,”I love this part of the country, I mean look at this weather and look at all of the fans out here. It’s gonna’ be anybody’s game right now.” Jake Barlow, Elite Series high school angler fished with Hite today.
Cliff Pace,”I might get back in there, I’ve been catching my fish really shallow. All y’all come out here in the rain, for all y’all to come out here in the rain we don’t have this kind of crowd in beautiful weather. I appreciate it.”
Dean “Froggin’ Machine ” Rojas, not making the twelve cut, ”Going into day three its nice to be in position but unfortunately things happened to me today. Gander Mountain is giving my boat away, all you got to do is go to gandermountain.com and sign up for it.”
Sitting in second place for AOY, Kevin VanDam,” You want to have a good final day, the fish are already wet it shouldn’t bother them. Yesterday I caught nothing but 2-pounders, but every day it kept changing and I couldn’t figure it out. It’s a great fishery and it’s usually putting out some big bites.”
Andy Montgomery,”I just want to get in a hot shower, It’s tough I only caught 7 today.”
Marty “The Party” Robinson, “I didn’t expect the crowd to be this big today this is great. I fished both of my good areas the first two days, I just ran around today getting nothing but little bites.”
Aaron “A-Mart” Martens fished with an Elite Series high school angler today, ”What happened out there, the same thing that happened to Kevin. It’s hard to get on top of it, there was no current today. I kept hoping the flooding would subside, yesterday I caught 35 keepers. It’s amazing today I couldn’t catch them. The skies got to open up some time today. You all showed up today that’s awesome, I can’t wait to thaw my hands out and get a shower. I can’t wait to get home and get some sleep.” He gets the Livingston day two leader award check for $500.
Not making the twelve-cut, Edwin Evers,”With a day like today its really hard to get over. I had a four pounder got it up to the boat and it got away. It was a pitiful day then I got another one but it wasn’t big enough.”
Didn’t make the twelve-cut, Brandon Palaniuk,”I have such a good rain suit so I didn’t even get wet. I threw a giant swimbait all week. I caught a spot thinking it was a big largemouth and it was a small spot and I put it on the deck next to the swimbait I was throwing and it was smaller than the swimbait I was throwing.”
John “Cruise Missile” Crews,” It was decent and a struggle, I caught them different each day. I’m fishing a missile bait I’m working on its not out yet, I’m setting the hook and a 5-pounder floated by and then the line broke. I pulled the lineup and the line looked like it had been nicked with a scissor. The next fish it happened again and the eyelet has a spot in it and I’m gonna’ make sure I get that fixed before the next time.”
From 32nd place he rocketed to fourth place, Todd Faircloth,” I caught more weight today then I fished the first two days of the tournament. I just spent the whole day looking for largemouth. I got some good quality bites today and tomorrow I’m going to do it again.”
Ish Monroe, “I fished all week long on a topwater frog and later on today I switched to a Rover and I still couldn’t swing it. See you next week everybody and hopefully some eighty-degree weather.”
2012 Bassmaster Classic winner, Chris Lane, “My grandmother turned 80-years old today and theres a party going on in Florida for her, Happy birthday. I had one of those big West Point giants about 8 or nine pounds and I was reeling it in towards me, and he gets right up to the boat and spit the hook right back out at me and went on.”
Nate Wellman,” IT’s good to go back to catching fish again. I had fun fishing in the rain again. Im from the north and I’m used to the snow and the rain and the nastys. I’ve been using small baits and light line all week”
Kevin ”Pink” Short,” Yes, and despite the rain I had a good day, I want to thank Jim Sexton for riding on the boat today. Zoom shaky head worm, and caught a lot of small fish on clay banks. I don’t know why they were there. All you people in the rain, I’m getting paid I don’t know why you all are here but I appreciate it.”
Driving out with $10,000 today, Brian “The Snowman” Snowden, ”Zoom Flume Tube on that flooded grass. My feet got wet at eleven and after that it was downhill.”
Announcer Dave Mercer to Elite High School Experience angler Jameson Maxwell, “So what made you pick Elite Pro Gerald Swindle””
“I picked Gerald Swindle because he’s very handsome,”Jameson Maxwell Elite Series high school angler said proudly, Gerald Swindle, whispered in his ear.
”I just needed to gain 15-20 points so I could get to the ‘Classic.’ I got wet.” Swindle leans over and says to Jameson, “Me and Dave used to have a man thing going on.”
Announcer Dave Mercer laughs,”Until he took me to the Waffle House.”
Swindle yells out to the audience, “I guarantee you ladies love the Waffle House.” The fans scream.
Dave, “I had no problem with the Waffle House, it was what happened after the Waffle House I had troubles with.” The audience laughs in unison.
Swindle’ “I told you not to get smothered and slathered and all that other, and all that cos’ you get the splatters the next day.” The crowd busts out laughing.
