On May 28, 2013, HLN host Dr. Drew spoke with two jurors from the Jodi Arias trial who shared their insight on the events that resulted in a first-degree, murder conviction yet hung jury regarding the penalty phase. Juror # 6 Diane Schwartz was joined by alternate juror #17 Tara Kelley who explained why they were in favor of the death penalty and shed light on why four jurors held out for a life sentence for the woman who stabbed her lover Travis Alexander 29 times, shot him in the head and sliced his throat from ear to ear.
Diane Schwartz explained that those who held out for life were swayed by Arias’ mitigating factors as well as the text messages Travis Alexander had previously sent her where he called her derogatory names.
“I think from the perspective of not wanting to enforce, that`s looking at the mitigating circumstances. It was really the abuse, I think, was the biggest, the potential that there was abuse, the text messages. A lot of it was verbal and emotional. It was also her age,” Diane Schwartz explained to Dr. Drew.
When asked if she felt there had been any redeeming factors about Jodi Arias that would have caused her to feel compassionate towards her Diane Schwartz answered no.
She stated, “Not to me, there wasn`t. At that point, we had had so much information submitted to us. And the lack of remorse, I did not feel that there was any remorse. And so, there just wasn`t a redeeming factor for me.”
Many have publicly expressed similar sentiment saying they do not believe Jodi Arias is truly remorseful for murdering Travis Alexander.
A new jury is expected to convene in July and the penalty phase of the Jodi Arias trial will resume. Arias continues to face the death penalty for murdering Travis Alexander.
