Have you ever heard of “Kissing Ball” ? This is also known as a pomander. This is a ball covered with flowers and often used at celebration like a wedding and Christmastime. We frequently make this flower balls at our classroom when teaching wedding flowers. Kissing ball is usually held by a bride at a wedding whereby the beauty of brides can be well enhanced. If you take a precise look at a kissing ball, it has a looped ribbon attached to the top of a ball so that it can be suspended when celebrating weddings and Christmas as well.
Recently at a wedding some people want to use a pomander as an alternative bouquet replacing the conventional type of bouquet. Sometimes it is hung from a ceiling. Sometimes it is displayed on the table as a centerpiece decoration. Or it is used to decorate chairs at weddings. Anyway this floral ball is pretty popular at weddings and you may have found it at a wedding ceremony.
Pomander has an interesting history as stated below. During medieval times, pomanders were silver containers which were filled with perfumes for chasing away odors or diseases. By Victorian times, a popular pomander was a clove-studded orange. From this, the pomander morphed into the floral ball which we know today. During the middle ages and the Renaissance, it was pretty popular among upper class people. Many people thought that carrying such scents would protect from disease. It was so popular especially as a protection against infection in times of pestilence or merely as a useful article to modify bad smells due to infrequent bathing and also the odors of public places.
As mentioned in the above, there are several ways you can display pomanders at weddings. There are many students who show interest in making pomanders at the classroom.
When we make pomanders at our classroom, we usually use floral foam in the shape like a ball. After soaking this round floral foam in water, we mount flowers on the surface of the ball by inserting stems of flowers. Since floral foam is soaked and contains water, flowers inserted into the floral foam can be kept fresh for a while and it helps a bride look more beautiful or provides a little bit different kind of sophisticated atmosphere if displayed on a table as a centerpiece decoration.
