This weekend featured two big new releases going head to head, but in the end, it was last weekend’s top movie that remained the champion. Pixar’s “Monsters University”, a sequel to their previous hit “Monsters, Inc.”, has proved that it’s a hit as well with another solid performance at the box office this weekend. It grossed $46.1 million.
“The Heat” followed in close second with $40 million, surprisingly beating its main competitor “White House Down” by a long shot. The comedy stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as cops who team up to take down a drug lord, a humorous combination that resonated with audiences. “White House Down”, meanwhile, was beaten by “World War Z”, which came in third with $29.8 million. “White House Down” followed in fourth with only a $25.7 million debut. For whatever reason, it was not nearly as successful as director Roland Emmerich’s previous action and disaster films, which include the blockbuster favorite “Independence Day”. This film featured Washington, D.C. getting bombarded again, only by terrorists instead of aliens, and starred Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. Strong competition from other movies currently in release likely hurt its chances of performing any better this weekend.
