On May 21, 2013, former congressman Anthony Weiner announced he is putting his hat into the ring in a bid for New York City mayor, according to USA Today. His announcement comes almost two years after he admitted tweeting a photo of his crotch to a young Seattle woman.
Weiner made the announcement via a YouTube video, in which he notes, “I am running for mayor because I have been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it my entire life, and I hope I get a second chance to work for you.”
Following the Twitter fiasco two years ago, the Democrat resigned from the House, but revealed last month in a New York Times Magazine interview he was planning to get back into politics.
The crotch photo was not the only faux pas made by Weiner at the time, who also admitted to exchanging at least five Twitter messages with a teenage girl in Delaware. The messages were not inappropriate and the girl’s family told the New York Times they were “harmless,” but the family expressed concern over the fact Weiner—46 at the time—had been in private contact with a high school-aged girl.

In addition, in 2011, Weiner further disclosed he had sent explicit and inappropriate messages to at least six other women using social media—one of them being porn star Ginger Lee.

In the video released Tuesday, Weiner also said, “…I know I let a lot of people down. But I’ve also learned some tough lessons.”
The YouTube footage also includes Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin and the couple’s young son, Jordan.
