This past Tuesday May 28th, the Westside Baptist Church Mass Choir released their latest project One Witness. Under the direction of Dr. Patrick Bradley and with production from Roy Cotton, this project is one of the best available. The liner notes read like a who’s who of DFW and National musicians and singers. This choir is phenomenal and can stand on its own, but this project ‘gets by with a little help from friends’.
This choir’s nostalgic sound and project will put you in the mind of the Mississippi Mass Choir. They’ve found a way to capture the iconic sound and energy of Mississippi Mass while showcasing their own intrinsic complexities.
Mighty Good Day is your classic choir song. It begins the album with an attention commanding intro and the choir marches full speed ahead from there!
*I was missing the choir clap on this one. If it is missing anything, it is that wide sound effect created by the entire choir clapping in unison.*
We Lift You High immediately grabs you by the ears and will this song of praise will bless your life!
Gaye Arbuckle leads the album’s first repeat selection. Write this down: you will be pressing repeat once you hear I Know Something About God’s Grace. This selection is phenomenal!! You’ll have to listen fully discover the jewel of this song. Gospel maestro Steve Lewis takes you right to brink of a shout with his reprise and rendition of Amazing Grace.
The choir follows up with an amazing anthem singing the scripture Romans 10:9. When I say anthem, you say Westside Baptist Church. Dr. Patrick Bradley is one of the nation’s finest music instructors and has created a well-rounded, musically diverse culture at Westside. The immaculate execution of this original anthem is well documented proof!
Going All The Way is your chance to have some down home, old school church. What starts out as hand clapping, foot stomping churns and burns with one of most intricate musical melodies, guitar lines and a strong Baptist bump! If you love choirs, this will also be on repeat! The album was recorded live, but you can be assured that some church was had with this song!
It’s a Blessing gives you a 6/8 gospel ballad and you need to zip up your choir robe and rock with the choir as they bless the Lord for His blessings!
Moving on from blessings to miracles, Dr. Bradley introduces Before I Ask with a testimony of his mother’s battle with cancer. She began her day with prayer in thanksgiving before even asking the Lord for anything else. A powerful testimony and a powerful song! This song is for the worshipers! The song is wonderful in its own right, but the pairing of Cornis Wells-Cannon with the Westside choir and this is easily in the running for song of the year!
Remaining in the vein of worship Niya Cotton leads the choir into the presence of the Lord with Fill the Room.
From there the choir makes a bold declaration with We’ve Come. Following that selection is Abundantly Blessed which is the choir’s first single from the album. Make sure to call in and request it on your favorite gospel stations across America. Look for it this week on SoulProsper Radio.
Closing out the album is Offering Time! Normally churches want some “marching music” during offering time and church musicians glaze over a praise and worship song or a gospel music classic in an effort to get the church to lift their voice but Dr. Bradley found words to express what should be every believers attitude when giving.
Hitting repeat wasn’t good enough, this examiner has decided to share this song at church! It should come as no surprise to see this song shared across the nation!
This album is phenomenal! The production is top tier and the arrangements and songwriting is without equal. Hats off to Dr. Bradley, Roy Cotton for a job well done! Westside’s One Witness is your next addition to your gospel music collection. Don’t buy another cd before you buy this amazing project!
