Now that the “unofficial” start of summer is upon us, it’s time to look beyond the BBQs and pool parties. It’s an event (and I use the word “event” loosely) that goes way further than what the Mayans, or whoever it was that defined what a standard week actually is. It’s ten days of anything and everything this great city can offer from the world of all things beer. Everyone, kindly raise your glasses for Philly Beer Week 2013!
From tap takeovers, to food and beer pairings, giveaways, specials, and maybe a few events that might seem a little out of the ordinary, I can guarantee that any bar you walk into from May 31st to June 9th, will be celebrating in some way, shape or form. And if they’re not, leave. Leave as fast as you can. If you don’t, you could be missing out on one of the greatest experiences of your lives. I promise. There’s clearly not enough room here for me to list all of the events (Listing a day’s worth is a mission in itself.). I can however, list some of the ones that seem to be getting a lot of attention:
Friday, May 31st: “Welcome to Philly! Now, drink up.”
Since it’s listed officially as the very first event of the week, it’s absolutely worth mentioning. Stop by the Irish Pol at precisely 12:01am through closing for a Happy Hour that’s ranked as one of the best in the city. Almost every beer on tap is only $3. Have you seen their wall of taps? It’s, in a word, epic!
Friday, May 31st: “Hammer of Glory Relay”
Follow the “HOG” all day throughout the city as all the festivities get underway. Click here for a detailed map of where you can catch this legendary piece of PBW history.
Sunday, June 2nd: “Craft Beer Day on East Passyunk”
I don’t think the people organizing this affair could’ve picked a better day: 3 days into PBW. Be sure to make a day out of this, as every bar along the avenue will be participating with specials, samplings, and everything in between, including, but not limited to $15 buckets of Bell’s Beer at Stogie Joe’s, and a Dogfish Head-style cookout at the Pub on Passyunk East. Click here for a full schedule of the day’s events.
Monday, June 3rd: “Bespoke Bacon Beer Bash”
There’s bacon in the title. What more do you want?
Bespoke Bacon, the folks who provide Prism Brewery with the bacon for their Insana Stout and their bacon jam, will be at the brewery from 7-9pm cooking up bacon, and some bacon infused pulled pork.
It’s also worth noting that the word “bacon” was used 5 times in that last sentence. That alone, makes this event, for lack of a better word, simply awesome! $15 covers your food and first beer.
Tuesday, June 4th: Cage Match!!!
Old-school cage matches were decided when the winner escaped through the door, or over the top of the cage. I don’t think that’ll be necessary here, though I suppose a good body slam can’t be ruled out. This main event at Alla Spina features Ommegang Brewery going head-to-head against Victory Brewing in an effort to win over our hearts (and stomachs) in this battle-to-the-death (not really, that was just fun to say) beer-pairing show-down. Four courses, eight beers (one from each brewery per course), just $35 per ticket. Seating is limited, and is only being held to their “cage table” so be sure to get your tickets soon!
Check back later as I highlight some of the events the second half of the week has in store. For a full list of events, visit the official Philly Beer Week website. Twitter users, just follow the hashtag #PBW2013 to get in on everything. I hope you get to experience this for all that it’s worth! Cheers!
