The counseling students in the office this week said that they think parents need a re-cap of what a young person getting ready to leave home for sure needs to know. So, based on their review here it is:
.) Have a Driver’s license or State ID
.) Know how to ride the MetroTransit even if you don’t have to.
.)Register and vote. Understand that committing a felony undoes voting privileges.
.) Understand about apartment and other sales contracts, including utility bills and upkeep
.) Understand about general maintenance of items in a home, including things like a lawnmower. Have a simple household tool kit.
.) Understand how to apply for a job and what papers are necessary ( DL/ID and SSN), letters of reference and prior employment addresses, possibly a resume.
.)Have a first aid kit, and understand basic first aid.
.) Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it.
.) Have a fire/safety/disaster plan, including where to meet up if no electronics.
.) Be aware of the benefits of duct tape, bailing wire, chewing gum, plastic zip fasteners and panty hose for repairs in a pinch.
.) How to budget money
.) What food to buy to last a week or longer
.) How to prepare some basic foods
.) How to set up a bank account and savings, fees, credit cards and banking card functions.
.) How to draft a written sample of a house rules contract for a young person and room mate or house mate that addresses money, belongings, food and personal boundaries, hours and guests or pets.
.) Confirm they know where to get counseling, faith support, health services or sexual health services, vehicle repairs, dentist, eyecare and that they have a copy of their health insurance card.
.) Make sure they currently have a copy of their Social Security Card and birth certificate.
.) Make sure they know what kinds of clothing they need for work or training and that not having certain types of clothing ( steel toed shoes) may prevent them from being able to participate.
.) How and where to do Laundry and that clean clothes and a clean body are a good idea.
.) If you are ok with your young person coming back to you to ask questions, make that plain. If you are ok with your young person returning to live in your home in the future explain how that would work before they move in.
What would you add that a young person needs to know before leaving home?
