Rebtel, the world’s largest mobile VoIP provider after Skype, today announced results from its recent Mother’s Day survey, which polled U.S. moms and adults 18 and over about their plans for staying in touch this holiday.
The study found that while the number of options for staying connected has skyrocketed over the last few years, voice/phone calls were strongly preferred as a way to stay in touch. Overall, 60.7 percent of moms said they are expecting a call from their son or daughter this Mother’s Day, and when asked what they want most, receiving a voice/phone call (31.0 percent) took the #1 spot over a hug (27.6 percent) flowers (16.1 percent), and jewelry (3.4).
The study also found that 92.6 percent of U.S. adults who plan to get in touch with Mom on Mother’s Day intend to use voice/phone and a surprising 37.7 percent of those respondents said they plan to speak for an hour or more.
Material Moms Look Forward to Mother’s Day, With an Eye on Tech
While moms reported that they love phone calls and hugs, most look forward to receiving some type of gift. The survey found that 66.7 percent of moms are expecting to receive a gift this year, and almost half (45.3 percent) want their gift to be something just for them. 38.4 percent said they wanted a gift for the whole family, while something to be shared with their husband or significant other came in a distant third at 11.6 percent and something for their children came in last with a paltry 4.7 percent.
When asked what tech gift they want most, the full-size iPad was the most desired with 30.2 percent of moms ranking it highest on their wish list. Its smaller cousin, the iPad Mini, came in far behind at only 11.6 percent. When it came to phones moms most wanted, iPhones were strongly favored over Android phones, 29.1 percent to 11.6 percent respectively.
Other Mother’s Day survey highlights include:
· 90.8 percent of mothers listed speaking on the phone with their son or daughter as ‘very important.’
· 54.3 percent of mothers claim that they always get a call from their son or daughter.
· 61.6 percent of general adult respondents said that price has ‘a major effect’ on the length of time they plan to talk.
· 35.5 percent of respondents said that the communication option they are least likely to use is mail / card, with the Facebook / social networks coming in second at 22.5 percent.
“Mother’s Day is consistently one of the heavier call days of the year and the fact that nearly 38 percent of those who responded plan to talk an hour or more with their moms reinforces why this is the case,” said Anna Alenius-Mathson, head of communication at Rebtel.
