In the greater Los Angeles area there is a place you can sight see with “fun” in their name and a bull shark you can ride. Where is this place? Balboa, baby.
Balboa is actually part of Newport Beach. And Balboa is where you will find the Balboa Fun Zone. This summer the Balboa Fun Zone, 600 E Bay Ave (949.675.8915) welcomed a new attraction: the bull shark ride.
The bull shark ride, for those who remember the days when riding the bull in your local tavern was all the rage, is basically one of these mechanical bulls dressed to look like a bull shark.
For $10 you can climb aboard and ride the bull shark on the Balboa Fun Zone. And forever more you will have bragging rights that you once (or more) rode a bull shark and lived to tell about it.
If Bull Shark riding is not your cup of tea, there are other fun things to do when you visit the Balboa Fun Zone like the Ferris Wheel and the arcade. Skee Ball or air hockey anyone? Kayak, stand up paddle board or other boat rentals are also available.
For those fans of the Arrested Development, the one thing you will not find at the Balboa Fun Zone is the Bluth Banana Stand. Even when the banana stand was on location for the show and having all believe it is located at the Balboa Fun Zone, they filmed in Marina del Rey. The fictitious placement of this fictitious banana stand is a shout out to the show’s creator, Mitchell Hurwitz’s fond memories of this sight from when he was a kid.
