One political pundit stated last evening that Americans by and large do not care at all about Benghazi and that most probably don’t even know what the story is about.
The facts appear to confirm his suspicions. A roving reporter for a certain news publication took to the streets of a major city to do an informal, non-scientific poll of average Americans concerning the Benghazi scandal. Roughly 60 percent of those asked had no idea what Benghazi is much less what happened there.
Television ratings tell another interesting story. Although the Benghazi scandal is exploding all over the mainstream news outlets, most Americans seem uninterested and would rather watch instead the Jodi Arias murder trial.
And in a poll cited by Fox News, 46 percent of those polled believe that the Obama administration attempted to cover up the Benghazi scandal with lies, while 43 percent believe that the administration has told the full truth.
Had Americans actually been listening and watching the news no doubt the figure would be much higher concerning the cover up. The facts now confirm in the minds of even the most hardened skeptics in the mainstream media that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Susan Rice lied repeatedly to the public about the scandal. Even CBS News’ Bob Schieffer is said to be angry that Rice lied to his face.
So, what should Benghazi matter to ordinary Americans? Hillary Clinton’s now-infamous exclamation in testimony before Congress captures perfectly the attitude of the dumbed down masses — “What difference does it make?” But it makes all the difference in the world that America has haphazardly dealt with politics in such a way as to make it possible for chronic and habitual liars to make their way to the top offices of the land.
The notion that the Benghazi massacre “happened so long ago” doesn’t cut it. There is no statute of limitations on murder. And there is no statute of limitations on high crimes and misdemeanors in public office.
The lackadaisical attitude of many Americans toward duplicity and deception on the part of government officials is indicative of the decline of overall ethics in the country as a whole. Apparently many ordinary citizens do not care if their elected representatives and their political appointees lie because they know that they themselves lie on a regular basis, daily. And no nation or empire in the history of the world has ever survived very long once its ethical foundation was breached in such a blatant fashion.
Further, why would talented and courageous Americans be willing in the future to put their lives on the line in serving their country when they cannot trust their government to do the right thing, to provide all of the resources necessary to protect them in dangerous areas of the world? Ambassador Stevens had that trust and was summarily betrayed by the very people who sent him to Libya. His trust got him killed.
And more importantly, when the minority of government personnel who have retained their honesty and integrity watch as their government lies about what they saw with their own eyes, and then goes before the entire world with a concocted story to cover it up, the demoralization that ensues has the potential of entirely crippling the critical missions that U.S. personnel are expected to carry out on the ground in various parts of the world.
One other factor is worthy of mention. If the government can lie and cover up its bungling of a most important mission overseas, it is entirely reasonable to ask what else is the government lying about. Benghazi is not the first time this administration has been caught in an intricate and extensive web of lies. We can only assume there is much more that has not yet been discovered.
Are they lying to you about your pensions? Have they raided the retirement accounts of citizens, unnoticed, and prevented banks from disclosing what has happened? Are they telling the truth about Obamacare? Are they being honest about the root causes of “gun violence?” Or have they opted instead to do what they have been shown to do on any number of issues — concoct a scheme, a lie to advance an agenda? Have they come clean with you about the fact they have implemented the very same policies that led to the big financial collapse of 2008? That they are now once again giving mortgages to those who cannot afford to pay them back? And that federal guarantors of those mortgages are being used as welfare agencies that have a vested interest in attempting to approve anyone and everyone for a housing loan, whether they are financially sound or not?
Or what about the national debt? Have they told you the truth about how dangerous it is? That there is no way to pay it back? That your children and grandchildren will wind up with the bill long after you are dead?
What about these issues? Do these issues matter to you more than the Jodi Arias murder trial?
Lying about major, “big headline” news stories is usually only the tip of the iceberg once a pattern of deception has been established. And that is why you should care about Benghazi. And the fact that human life at the American consulate in Libya was not important enough to try to save means that this government probably thinks your life isn’t worth much, either.
