In the last decade the climate has stopped getting warmer and this isn’t supposed to happen because scientist who don’t accept the premise of climate change are being paid by Big Oil to fool everyone and if it turns out they’re right then there is no justice in the universe.
This is how the British publication The Independent reports the good news (at least we should think it’s good news):
Huge amounts of heat – equivalent to the power of 150 billion electric kettles – are being continuously absorbed by the deep ocean, which could explain why global warming has “paused” over the past 10 to 15 years, scientists have concluded in a series of reports to explain why the Earth’s rate of warming has slowed down.
Okay, since we’ve been using fossil fuels it has made the climate warmer so the story goes. Now aaaaall of a sudden the ocean decides in the last ten years to absorb the heat. That makes sense doesn’t it? It didn’t absorb the heat in the 30’s 40’s 50’s 60’s all the way up to the 90’s and then the ocean starts to absorb the extra heat. Now it isn’t getting warmer anymore.
But the warminists and the compliant press won’t just give up that easy, they can explain it all. The article continues:
Global average temperatures are higher now than they have ever been since modern records began. However, after a period of rapid temperature increases during the 1980s and 1990s there has been a significant slow-down since the turn of the century, leading some skeptics to claim that global warming has stopped.
“Sceptics” they call it. Skeptical about what? That the climate isn’t getting warmer? Well, read the article, it isn’t, the ocean is absorbing the heat, so they think. So what’s this business about “skeptics”. Don’t they have a point?
Here’s the excuse:
A scientific assessment of the planet’s heat balance has found that the most likely explanation for the recent hiatus in global warming is the continual absorption of thermal energy by the huge “heat sink” of the deep ocean many hundreds of metres below the sea surface, according to scientists from the Met Office.
The “most likely” explanation? If this is a likely explanation then why didn’t anyone come out and say “well fossil fuels cause warming but it won’t really get warmer because the ocean will absorb the heat”? It now sounds like science is being made up as new evidence to the contrary comes to light.
The Independent quotes a climate scientist from Rutgers University who puts a rational assessment of the phenomenon:
“Some people call it a slow-down, some call it a hiatus, some people call it a pause. The global average surface temperature has not increased substantially over the last 10 to 15 years,” Professor Sutton said.
“Climate scientists absolutely expect variations in the rate at which surface temperature will rise….but that is not to say we understand all the details of the last 10 to 15 years,” Professor Sutton said.
Now that sounds like a true scientist when he says not all the details are fully understood. But not all the details are fully understood when we take surface temperatures either. This centuries “warming” is compared to other centuries that did not have surface temperature readings. We are comparing data with experiments that weren’t done in the past.
What is not fully understood, to The Independent, becomes an iron-clad explanation. The article title is “Has global warming stopped? No – it’s just on pause, insist scientists, and it’s down to the oceans.” Well not all scientist certainly, but you would think it was all scientists. The claims in the article use the word “scientist” in a loose and flippant manner:
The pause, however, is unlikely to change the predictions over the future course of global warming. Temperature increases expected by 2015 will only be delayed by a further five or ten years, the scientists said.
Who are we kidding? The earth is on schedule to get warmer but it is on “pause” for the last 15 years and that pause will continue for another “five to ten years”? This is what “scientists said”. But other scientist aren’t saying this. The scientist they cite come from “The Met office”. Where? Yea I know, what the heck is a “Met Office”?
This is sloppy citation meant to have us think these conclusions carry more weight then they really have. It hasn’t gotten warmer in the last 15 years and it will not continue to get warmer for some time to come. But it is getting warmer just the same according to the “scientists” and if you don’t believe it you’re a “skeptic”.
