We all have epic moments in our life, one’s that test our souls and other’s that define who we are. When we get the choice to purchase the extra sandwiches and hand them to the homeless on the street. When we can hold an old ladies hand as she is crossing the road, or just show up with a smile for a game of Parcheesi with the fam (does anyone actually play Parcheesi?) but the point is, life is not so much about what is happening, but more about what you are doing about it, if you are brave enough to consistently follow your heart.
L.A… A city, I have lived and loved in, in all of her delicate layers. From bare feet and bike rides in Marina Del Ray, to Light Shops in West Hollywood, a backyard that was Madame Tussauds and the stars of Hollywood blvd. My morning neighbors weren’t out reaching for the paper on grassy slopes in slippers and house coats, they were the cab drivers parked along orange, the street that you know is a cut through only if you are a local. To a loft in Los Feliz where I would often pay It forward. Hi I’d say to the elderly man wheelchair bound who would sleep in a mound on the ground, or sometimes huddled over with his hands in his lap crying. I dropped him off pastries and protein drinks, hot soups and so forth. One day I saw the old bus stop landing station devoid of him and his blankets and pillow in the trash can… I sent love to his spirit that I knew was at peace now, somewhere still existing having endless days of warm summer and hot buttered rolls, mom laughing in the kitchen, welcoming him home.
A tear falls now when I write this article, thinking about the ins and outs of the city, and how they correlate to the ins and outs of the way we love, and what we believe in.
Thomas Wolfe once said, you can never go home again, and I have quoted that before, and now I know that for sure… in the sense that home is ever revolving, growing, transpiring into all of the richness that we ourselves are capable of, and in a sense that can never be tied to just one place. Each day is an opportunity for us to fill that richness, to have a new experience, and to love.
We get to choose it, all of it. We can struggle to let go as we risk the capacity of the greatness that we are stepping into, we can stop and reminisce, we can allow life to leave us broken hearted or we can say ado’ ado’ món tiềm and thank you for loving me, for the honor of the experience, and for showing up. Taking with us only the jewels from each experience, each casting call, or lunch with friends, or even heartbreaking moment.
Art is your heart speaking. It perhaps is why I am so fond of movies, and shows, and Tennyson love poems, and so forth… when really done right I believe that in any good art piece the heart of the person comes through. I also share the belief that Art exists everyday within our lives, that our realities are shaped and that we are the Artists of them… yes our destinies beckon to us, perhaps through fate, but within each moment, what is tilled is what WE make of them, and that is a power that is beautiful, and present. Execute that within your lives daily artists, and I in mine. In that space of congruency I know that we can rise above the struggle, and set an example for love.
So ask yourself this question, are you willing to take a chance on love? The risk is worth the outcome.
