Since we’ve only had a few days without rain so far this month, I posed this question on a LinkedIn group. If you could choose 3 wines to have with you on your Ark, which wines would you choose? I got some interesting answers ranging from local favorites to high value prized wines. The general consensus, though was that it is best to choose a wine that goes well with a variety of foods to get you through the big flood without having to sacrifice nice food and wine pairings. Pinot Noir and Prosecco were popular choices.
If we should ever find ourselves in need of an ark, however, it is important to consider the fact that there may be little warning and we would be too busy building the ark to shop around for the perfect wine to take. There would be no time for a road trip and definitely no time to put in a special order with the PLCB. I would have to be practical and choose wines that I could get easily that I could drink day after rainy day. That being said, here are the 3 wines that I think I would choose.
Kendall Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay
This is a classic Chardonnay with a bit of malolactic fermentation and oak aging. It has a smooth slightly buttery texture and slightly woodsy vanilla flavors combined with juicy ripe fruit. It’s not overpowering, but just right. It would be a great accompaniment to shrimp pasta, chicken dishes or the MRE’s that we would have on the ark. It is available at every PA Wine and Spirits Store as well as many local restaurants.
Rex Goliath Merlot
I could drink this Merlot anytime. It has a good balance of interesting peppery and tobacco notes and well ripened red fruit. It is good for evening brooding or with pizza, burgers, steak or… the MRE’s that we would have on the ark. It too is available at every Wine and Spirits store, in large bottles, I might add.
I would take this wine simply to satisfy my sweet tooth. It is just the right combination of crisp and sweet. It is not too sweet and yet it is not tart at all. It is a very refreshing wine that would be great with appetizers such as soft cheeses, rich desserts such as cheesecake or, of course, the MRE’s that we would have on the ark. It is available at the Kavic Winery in Carnegie,
Although these wines are the wines that I would take with me on my ark, they are not just wines for a rainy day. They are all great everyday wines. They are inexpensive, easy to find and perfect for many occasions. They are great wines to keep stocked in your house–just in case.
