World Fighting Championships held their eighth event last night at Reno, Nevada’s newly remodeled Grand Sierra Resort & Casino On Saturday, June 29, 2013. This was a split card of 2 Muay Thai fights and 6 MMA fights inside a boxing ring instead of a cage. Former UNR Wolfpack and New England Patriots NFL player-turned fighter Ryan Coulson won the Heavyweight Title in the main event. Fights on the under card were won by Jonathan Childress, Justin Durham, Deken Gossett, Robert Snow, Anthony Gomez and Josh Coleman. .
Jonathon Ball (debut) vs. Johnathan Childress (1-0)
This opening bout had just about everything an MMA fan could ask for, solid grappling, good standup and a great performance by both fighters. In the end this 3-round war in the ring went to the judges who declared Childress the winner by unanimous decision.
Justin Durham (1-0) vs. Chris Volasco (2-1)
Fresh off a debut victory at Ultimate Reno Combat 41 just three weeks ago, Durham defeated Volasco at 2:32 in the second round via TKO.
Deken Gossett (debut) vs. James Barstow (debut)
Whenever two Heavyweights collide in the cage or the ring, the typical fan either expects a quick knockout or three rounds of wrestling. This bout proved to be the exception as the fighters kept it standing for three rounds. Barstow showed some deft head movement and good shots to no avail against Reno’s Deken Gossett who seemed to exhibit more stamina and some impressive kicks which won him a unanimous decision from the judges.
Vinnie Reymus (debut) vs. Robert Snow (0-1)
In the fourth bout Robert Snow defeated Vinnie Reymus by majority decision after 3 rounds.
Adam Hebenstreich (1-0) vs. Anthony Gomez (debut)
In the first of two Muay Thai fights, Anthony Gomez defeated Adam Hebenstreich by unanimous decision. Hebenstreich fought well, but a few times seemed to revert back to his MMA roots, which may have cost him a point or two with the judges.
Gio Mackey (2-2) vs. Daniel Reece (2-1)
This bout was ruled no-contest due to an illegal soccer kick by Mackey while Reece was down. Purely unintentional on Mackey’s part, Reece was unable to continue the fight.
Memo Vasquez (1-1) vs. Josh Coleman (debut)
In the co-main event and second Muay Thai fight of the evening, Josh Coleman defeated Memo Vasquez at 1:36 in round 2 via TKO.
Matt McCrary (5-2) vs. Ryan Coulson (2-0)
Former UNR Wolfpack and New England Patriots player from the NFL, Ryan Coulson defeated local Heavyweight favorite Matt McCrary via TKO in under one minute in the first round.
