Two of the top names in comics have joined forces again for a new creation. Scott Snyder, scribe of Batman and American Vampire (among others), and Sean Murphy, creator of Punk Rock Jesus and AV co-hort, have dreamed up a new series called The Wake, set under the sea and across at least 100,000 years.
The scope of this story is a lot to try and cram into the first of ten issues, with a brief glance at the future and origin of the story bookending it. The present story’s protagonist is Dr. Lee Archer, a cetologist (scientist that studies marine mammals). She is on location, talking to her son who is preparing to visit her when a helicopter drops in.
The Department of Homeland Security has sent Agent Cruz to recruit Lee into determining the source of a sound that was recorded at an Alaskan facility. The playback unsettles her as it is certainly something she has heard before and has no wish to revisit it. Cruz then offers her the only thing she would be willing to change her mind for: custody of her son.
What Archer and the rest of the team assigned to this investigation face is unknown but it will surely be full of horror and tragedy. Snyder knows how to go for the jugular which fits with Murphy’s remarkably expressive facial drawings. The color palette has a lot of pinks and purples which also add to the unsettling feeling.
Part One is an intriguing opening filled with impending dread for the characters. With nine issues to go, it’s safe to say this voyage is going to have a lot of passengers.
This first installment is at comic retailers now.
