Following yesterday’s information on Smart Match, Microsoft revealed some new details about playing online with the Xbox One. The latest out Wednesday concerns how the next-gen console’s reputation system will keep the good players separated from the online jerks and cheats.
Xbox LIVE program manager Michael Dunn explains that the reputation system uses a “crazy algorithm” based on all player feedback such as “blocking” or “muting” a player to come up with a reputation score that puts players into three different categories – ‘Green = Good Player,’ ‘Yellow = Needs Improvement’ or ‘Red = Avoid Me.’ – which will be displayed on the player’s gamercard as well.
“[Y]our reputation score is ultimately up to you,” Dunn states. “The more hours you play online without being a jerk, the better your reputation will be; similar to the more hours you drive without an accident, the better your driving record and insurance rates will be.”
Dunn goes on to explain that players won’t suddenly find themselves in the “Avoid Me” category because some other jerk spammed their account with complaints.
“The algorithm is looking to identify players that are repeatedly disruptive on Xbox Live. We’ll identify those players with a lower reputation score and in the worse cases they will earn the ‘Avoid Me’ reputation. Before a player ends up with the ‘Avoid Me’ reputation level we will have sent many different alerts to the ‘Needs Improvement’ player reminding them how their social gaming conduct is affecting lots of other gamers,” Dunn wrote.
“The algorithm is sophisticated and won’t penalize you for a few bad reports. Even good players might receive a few player feedback reports each month and that is OK.”
The reputation system will ultimately check to make sure that the complaints are valid in cases where a player suddenly receives an influx of complaints before reducing their reputation score while also taking into account the reporter’s reputation as well.
How this works in execution will have to wait until the Xbox One’s launch in November. The Xbox 360 had the rep rating for player’s but never really worked as advertised. Still, the efforts to keep the bad players separated from the rest already sounds much improved over the current-gen.
